A guide to accessing information on Defence business opportunities
Defence recognises that defence industry is central to delivering capability and
sustainment to the Australian Defence Force. To achieve this we are committed to
engaging with Australia’s defence industry to improve the relationship between
Defence and industry.
The Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) is the largest
contracting organisation in the country spending in excess of $12.5 billion a
year, on equipment, sustainment and services. We recognise that the size and
complexity of the ADF can make it difficult for companies to locate appropriate
points of contact in Defence.
The Defence + Industry ePortal addresses this
issue by providing a ‘one stop shop' where companies can access information on
opportunities to engage with both Defence itself and its prime contractors.
Your conduit in connecting Defence business to industry are the Defence Materiel
Organisation Business Access Offices (DMO BAOs), which are located in the
capital cities of all the mainland States and Territories.
DMO BAOs provide advice on doing business with Defence and inform local industry about future
business opportunities and changes within Defence. They also:
• Supply appropriate contact information to industry
• Plan, organise and manage the implementation of Defence programs and initiatives, such as:
- Defence Recognised Supplier Scheme
- Unsolicited Promotional Product Offers Scheme
- Defence + Industry Regional Briefings
- DMO participation in trade shows and exhibitions
- Industry briefings.
The DMO BAO network does this through:
• Proactively engaging with local companies to harness their expertise
• Visiting industry to maintain regular interaction and awareness of regional capability
• Working with local defence companies to outline Defence opportunities and maximise the strategic value of Australia’s defence industry.

Industry associations, teaming organisations and business networks can act as
conduits into Defence projects. They act as a point of contact to improve
communication and working relationships between SMEs and Defence. Some of these
organisations are identified below:
- The Australian Industry and Defence Network (AIDN), serves as a focal point for
Defence’s interaction with Australia’s smaller defence companies. The
state-based AIDN operates through a national secretariat that facilitates
communications between State bodies and Federal Government Departments, in
particular the Department of Defence and the Department of Industry, Tourism and
Resources. AIDN also represents member bodies on Department of Defence forums
and at relevant seminars. Importantly, AIDN represents the SME perspective in
the development of Defence Industry Policy and can mediate or assist in
resolving industry/Government misunderstandings.
- The Defence Teaming Centre in South Australia has a similar role to AIDN and
helps companies collaborate to win business
- The Industry Capability Network (ICN) provides information to Commonwealth
agencies and industry on capable and competitive Australian and New Zealand
(ANZ) industry with the primary objective of import replacement. From a Defence
perspective, ICN is used by purchasing officers to gain knowledge of prospective
suppliers and import replacement. Defence encourages suppliers to use the
services of ICN to buy locally and to assist in forming consortia and developing
Australian industry involvement.
- State and Territory governments have divisions dealing with industry support.
- A number of Defence oriented trade publications report on Government procurement
intentions and you may wish to subscribe to commercial business intelligence
services, which monitor Defence tenders, and to specialist Defence industry
directories which are published annually.
Australian Business Defence Industry Unit (DIU)
The Australian Business Defence Industry Unit (DIU), a wholly owned subsidiary of the New South Wales Business Chamber, was established in Canberra in 1998 as a strategic investment by the NSW Business Chamber, to represent the interests of Australia’s defence industry to both the Department of Defence and the Federal Government and assists members in their business related activities with specialist defence related business advice.
Rapid Prototyping, Development and Evaluation Program
The RPDE Program (or Rapid) is a group of focused problem-solvers helping Defence resolve difficult and challenging bite-sized problems. The program’s mission is to: “Enhance the ADF war fighting capacity through accelerated capability change in the Network Centric Warfare environment.”
Defence Teaming Centre
The Defence Teaming Centre is the peak South Australian Defence Industry organisation. We are focussed on building and growing the defence industry in South Australia.
